The Importance Of Waders In Fly Fishing

Among the things you will need in your gear when you go fly fishing is a pair of waders. So, what are waders and what are they used for?

With an effective pair of waders, you will be able to walk in the water and reach areas that you could otherwise not access from the shore. While in many cases you will carry your fly fishing on water, there are times when you will need to actually get into the water. It is therefore important for you to have a good means of staying dry and warm.

There are basically two different kinds of waders that you may choose from when you would like to purchase a pair. There are waders that have built-in boots and the waders that do not have boots. Each type of waders has its own benefits and downsides and your individual preferences will determine the type that you choose.

With the waders that have built-in boots, you will remain dry without having to budget for a pair of fishing boots. It is important for the boot section to fit you snugly, allowing you ease of movement. Putting them on and off is very easy, adding to their convenience. However, they do not offer good ankle support and they are heavier.

Stocking foot waders, on the other hand, are relatively lighter, with rubber sock ends. They offer ample support when the river-bed is rather slippery. However, you will have to purchase a pair of fishing boots to wear on top of them. These waders are more difficult to put on. You should buy stiff-soled boots that should give enough ankle support without being too tight.

Some waders reach the waist while others go up to the chest. The former waders are just for shallower waters while the latter type are good for even deeper waters. Hip boots are not very good in fly fishing since you will be limited on the depth of water you will be able to wade through. A wading belt will help you to stay dry in case you slip and fall in the water. A more convenient choice is using an elastic strap, since you will be able to move more freely and remain more comfortable.

You should be able to move a little inside the waders, hence they should not be too tight. Remember that you may need to put on some clothes underneath the waders in case you are going fly fishing in cold water.

Fly fishing waders are usually sold for between $100 and $600. In case you would like to buy used waders, you need to ensure that they do not leak. Waders are very important in fly fishing.
