It is among the biggest wilderness preserves, with an area of 200,000 acres. Here, you will be able to carry your fly fishing in private and take some exercises in the process. You will have the best experience when your fly fishing is during Spring, as the water becomes warmer. During this period, mayfly usually hatch in great numbers, offering the trout very enjoyable meals. This is the period and spot to make the best fly fishing for trout.

However, there are also other places in North Carolina that are suitable for fly fishing. Around Boone, there is the Big Helton Creek and the Watagua rivers. The first river is ideal for beginners while the second one offers seasoned anglers some pretty large fish.

Another good fly fishing spot in North Carolina is the Stone Mountain State Park, which is close to Elkin. A portion of the park is designated as 'Fish for Fun', where you may pay a given amount of money to have exclusive access to a section of a river (divided into eight sections) for a whole day for your fly fishing.
